The 1986 Porsche 3.2 Litre 911 Carrera.
I had been looking forward to this opportunity for a while and finally I had the pleasure of spending some time with Baden and his pristine Porsche Carrera.
A little about Baden – he is 42 years of age and is an Assistant Professor with a PHD in Finance and resides on the Gold Coast in Queensland.
In the initial questionnaire, he listed his occupation as a “Pracademic”. No doubt a play on words, so when asked if he could expand on this, his reply was “Its a version of academia with a practical application”. Baden’s professional passion is in entrepreneurship and innovation. His teaching focus is on Innovation Strategy and how to finance high growth business.
His music tastes are varied but lists Chet Faker, Rufus, Pearl Jam, Queen and Chuck Mangione and Jamiroquai. Excluding Pearl Jam and Queen, from what I am told, the remainder are in the modern electronic jazz genre – So there you go, I continue to learn something every day!
Baden’s hobbies and interests include: Motorsport (not surprisingly), real estate, Australian Rules Football and tech startups.
Now as much as I found this all very interesting, let’s move onto the main focus of this post.
Make : Porsche Year: 1986 Model: 911 Carrera
In my mind this is one of the classic Porsche models. Powered by the 3.2 litre fuel injected, naturally aspirated air cooled engine. Developing 231 Horsepower at 5800 RPM, which is about 172 KW in todays terms. The car develops some 284 Newton metres of torque at 4800 RPM. On reaching this rev range, is when you really start to hear the engine breathing, taking in deep and very meaningful breaths as it comes into its own! The interior noise has now significantly increased and you know it’s fair dinkum.
Acceleration from 0-100km per hour is 6.1 seconds with a top speed of 248 Km per hour. Remember this car is now twenty nine years old!
The rear engine is connected to a 5 speed manual transmission that can be a little tricky in shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. You sort of have to go 1st, neutral then align with the revs to slot into 2nd – similar to double clutching if that makes sense? From that point on it’s plain sailing. Additionally, you have to be just about stopped to select 1st. It’s like 1st is an inconvenience, which may be somewhat enhanced with the short shift gear stick. The ride is rigid and as mentioned previously, somewhat noisy with the rear engine sitting not far behind you with little attempt or apologies to dull the effect. It’s sort of raw, it has that race car feel about it. It’s exciting just being in it before you even turn a wheel!
The car sits on twin longitudinal torsion-bar springs with anti roll bar and Boge dampers on the front. Backed up by semi-trailling arms, torsion bar springs, anti roll bar and once again Boge dampers on the rear. The car is very effectively pulled up by four wheel discs.
Keeping it stuck to the road are 205/55R/16 tyres on the front with 245/45R/16 on the rear. In this case, it’s Continental tyres all round. When I asked about the handling Baden replied ” It’s like it is on rails and goes like the clappers”. He did also mention that if you are cornering at speed, avoid braking mid corner as being rear engined it can react very quickly where the rear end will just spin you around due to the weight shift – as opposed to a front engined vehicle.

The interior is a classic 911 driver orientated dash, with all the instruments in clear sight with bolstered leather seats and a Momo Prototipo after market steering wheel that is popular as a replacement to the bigger original factory fit. The interior is surprisingly well appointed with full leather interior, heated seats, air-conditioning, central locking, electric windows, electric sunroof and CD player with the removable face as was common at the time.
I asked Baden how he came across the car? “I was looking for a wide bodied 3.2 litre Carrera and had missed out on a beauty owned by John Bowe. This car had been on the market for a while and was in Perth. The PPI checked out and I grabbed it” There were no issues freighting it back to the East Coast.
Is there anything you would recommend to a potential buyer? “Aussie delivered cars are becoming highly sort after. A verifiable history is a must as is a sound body, any prior damage that hasn’t been professionally repaired can be very expensive to resolve” Baden’s additional advice – “Just buy it as these cars are steadily increasing in value!!”
What would your – ‘if I could’, car be? “A 930 Turbo or a 356 Outlaw. “I’d really like my Uncle Bryan’s Chevy L88 Camaro, or a full house R32 GTR, a 65 Mustang GT350, a Lancia Delta S4 Group B, a SWB Audi Quattro, or a Ford Escort RS 1800” – Whoa up Baden I think I get the picture!!
If I may say, Baden’s Porsche is absolutely immaculate and was another great example of a classic car. As with the generosity of past contributors to this section of www.manstheory.com, I cannot express my gratitude enough. It’s another example of what makes the world an interesting and exciting place. I hope there will be many more similar experiences. So a special thanks to Baden for his time and insight. What a great car !!
