The AUDI R8, David Bowie and a Star Man

I’ve known DJ for many years. His love of cars has taken him to many parts of the world and he has also been recognised by Audi through many awards for the quality work he does within this organisation. So it was a no brainer to ask if he would be kind enough to put a post together for manstheory.com. And as they say the rest is history – RD

Back in February, I was reading the manstheory post “Every Bloke Needs a Ute”. The description of the ute being a “strictly two seater V8 powered sports car” was an interesting approach. I had also recently been travelling in Italy when after catching up on the later manstheory post “Don’t Dwell in Brakes Crescent” where a rusted and neglected sports car had been compared to a neglected and unused life. I ironically came across two immaculate Mercedes Gull Wings. I sent these photo’s through to manstheory.com  which were then used in the follow up “The Gull Wing Revived”. From this RD approached me to do a post on the Audi R8. So here goes.

When it comes to fine motor vehicles, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to experience some very special cars through my work.

For the past seven years, I have worked with an Audi dealership as the Aftersales Manager by basically ensuring Audi owners are fully supported and their cars are maintained to the high degree of quality Audi prides itself on.
The role has so far taken me to track days at private circuits around the country, driving all S and RS models, a trip to China to attend the Shanghai Motor Show, numerous local drive days and opportunities to share the enjoyment of driving high performance cars with the owners on a daily basis.

The one car that I am yet to experience on the track is the Audi R8.

The Audi R8 is a car that continues to evolve. When first released back in 2007, the model was then a mid-engined 4.2 litre V8 developing 309 kilowatts. It would take you from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. The newest model released in June 2016 has a 5.2 litre V10 developing 397 kilowatts.  This rocket ship will take you from 0 to 100 in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 318 km/h.

In one corner of our showroom sits the previous model R8. This example is a V10 5.2 litre LMX – Number 55 of 99 released in the world. This engine develops 419 kilowatts or 562 Brake Horse Power. The car is fitted with a 7 speed S tronic transmission, carbon fibre ceramic disc brakes with red anodised brake callipers. The car sits on 19 inch rims with Pirelli 235/35 R 19 on the front and 305/30 R 19 inch Pirelli tyres on the rear.  

The list of extras on this car is far too long to mention here but it has the “works”. I have been fortunate enough to drive this particular car on many occasions and it is an amazing motor car.

It is the ultimate “strictly two seater V10 powered sports car”. For many of us the $445,000.00 price tag will be a little out of our range. Certainly makes the high performance ute a very attractive proposition! But unfortunately not quite in the same category. 

There are so many amazing cars available today. If you can afford a super car you are certainly spoilt for choice. Many manufacturers offer a wide range of models in this high performance category.
