As it turns out our brains have a bias towards negativity.

The brain will react to positive feelings like a Porsche or a great golf shot mainly due to both being very rare or non existent in my life, but your brain reacts more strongly to negative stimuli. This “negativity bias” is like the brain’s default setting.

Our attitudes are more heavily influenced by bad news rather than good news. Which goes a long way in explaining why so many people are fixated on the constant negative influence thrown at us through the media.

The negativity bias isn’t something new. It’s been part of the human evolution and a survival mode that keeps us out of harms way. You can imagine a time when stepping outside of your safety zone such as your cave and having to either look for your next meal or avoid becoming a meal for the predator that’s just as hungry. So the negativity bias evolved into our ability to notice danger before it’s too late. I guess you could call it a form of common sense. It has an influence on every aspect of our lives.

We all at some stage have bouts of depression or feelings of just being down. It’s damn near impossible to be loving life every single waking moment. It just doesn’t work that way.

A team environment that leans towards a more positive focus can allow the balance to shift to a more centred zone. As does a successful partnership like a marriage, the ability for each partner to recognise when positive support or reassurance is needed can be hugely beneficial in keeping an engaging and motivating environment alive.

It’s the frequency of lots of continual small positive acts that make the difference. The big things like birthday parties and shopping sprees are good for a quick positive hit, but don’t have the consistency required to tilt the balance.

So if you’re feeling like you are down more than you are up – chances are you’re very normal and like the rest of us. You just need to get some positive influence on a regular basis to increase your happiness and ability to work through the peaks and troughs. Avoid negative thoughts, read a great book or ten, turn off the news, get out and about, hang out with positive people, challenge yourself, set some goals, exercise regularly and have some fun  – RD
