Carpe Diem – Seize the Day

The Latin phrase “Carpe Diem” meaning “Seize the Day” isn’t a new revelation. Apart from the ancient Roman times, it was also expressed in many English poems in the 16th and 17th centuries.Robin Williams in his role as the breakaway teacher, John Keating, in the movie “The Dead Poets Society” used the phrase to motivate his students. – if you recall the movie, can you believe it was released thirty years ago! That in itself is a reality check – how time flies !

In today’s modern world, the availability of information and access to education on living your life to its fullest potential is as close as a blog post, subscribing to a podcast or reading a plethora of books on the subject. Or, even having your own life coach!

The saying, “the more things change the more they stay the same” appears to hold true.

Taking advantage of your time has obviously been a message that has been around for many, many centuries – it would seem even the Romans in the year 100 BC were keen on receiving a positive message – Seize the Day !

I can just imagine Tony Robbins, dressed in a Toga, delivering his message to the gathered crowd in the middle of the Colosseum in downtown ancient Rome all those centuries ago.

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears ! The reality is we can’t always just jump out of bed with a giant slaying mind set each and every day. It’s tiring stuff living a full life.

Some days you feel like you’re drowning and wondering how the hell you are going to make that deadline at work or just getting motivated to get into your day can be a challenge,  particularly when you’re feeling like you’re stuck on that treadmill. Getting the bills paid on time, getting the kids to school and their other activities along with all those other life issues that will always occur, all contribute to the challenges we all have to deal with regularly. Staying on top of things takes a fair bit of discipline and pure damn hard work at times.

To my way of thinking “Carpe Diem” is about doing the best you can. Getting the best out of your day, keep on keeping on when you have to dig a bit deeper and when the opportunities do arise, take full advantage of them. And the real “big daddy” of them all is never take life for granted – we never know what tomorrow will bring.

So it was somewhat ironic – when I was recently reading the letters of the Roman Philosopher Seneca (as you do) to his friend Lucilius. In the letter ” On the shortness of Life” Seneca goes onto say:

“Show me that the good in life does not depend upon life’s length, but upon the use we make of it; also, that it is possible, or rather usual, for a man that has lived long to have lived little. Say to me when I lie down to sleep: “You may not wake again!” And when I have waked: “you may not go to sleep again!”. Say to me when I go forth from my house: “You may not return!” And when I return: ” You may never go forth again!”

That’s all a little scary, but clearly the message is don’t waste your time – Seize the Day and give it your best shot or as they say in Rome “Carpe Diem !”
