I Can’t Do It Anymore!

I’m done – I’m pulling the pin!

Have you ever got to the point where you have just given up? I know I have. Only to realise later that you were actually very close to acheiving your goal. Hindsight is a great thing but of little use unfortunately.

You set out with a great idea or goal. It might be a fitness goal, a business idea or maybe you’re just trying to make a difference in your chosen field and prove something to yourself.

At first it’s all flying along, your enthusiasm drives your motivation – it’s all in great shape. I can do this you tell yourself, I’ve got it all mapped out. Wow, you say to yourself, why didn’t I do this before! You’re on fire as if the finish line is only just there – it’s a piece of cake!

Time moves on though and its getting a little harder and a little more complex. Progress hasn’t moved as quick as you would have liked. Then, somewhere in the middle the gloss starts to wear off and you start asking yourself the inevitable questions – Why am I doing this again? Oh yeah that’s right – I’m still passionate, I’m still committed!  Keep it up you can do it!

You regather yourself and you push on. You continue to stick at it but progress has now become a slow grind. It’s getting messy. The self doubt is starting to get a tighter grip. The reason behind it all has lost its shine. The passion is waning and hence any genuine commitment is virtually dead in the water. It’s all getting just too hard. And that’s about the time where most people “pull the pin” and give up.

The studies say it’s when you have covered 90% of the distance . That’s when it is really at its toughest and that’s the “I can’t” point. You’re beaten!

Yet if you only knew that you were almost there!

Realistically, in most cases you can’t just measure the goal and say “Hey I’m 90% there” so some context has to be considered. If you’re competing in a running race, then you know when you have covered 90% of the distance. But if you are building a business and looking for the point where things start to fall into place, that’s a distance that is difficult to measure, so it’s more having a feel for it.

If you are in mid-flight working towards your goal and you are starting to struggle, ask yourself the question; How much stamina have you still got? How committed are you? Have you still got the passion for what it is that started you on this path? Without the passion there can’t be a lasting commitment.

The flip side is that sometimes it is wiser to call it a day. The cost on yourself, your family and your finances don’t justify blindly persevering and risk damaging or at worst destroying all the other wonderful things that you already have.

But if you still want it bad enough and you have the belief, then the only thing stopping you is you. The “why” will find the how’s.

To quote Thomas Edison

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

And finally

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Good luck ! – RD

  1. They say stubbornness can be a bad trait. Perhaps sometimes it is not with this being one of my traits to achieve my goals. Who would of thought all these years on I am where I am after people said I couldn’t or wouldn’t get there. Yay for my bad trait.
