The Morgan 4-4
This time I have had the pleasure to catch up with Brin and his very special “Morgan”. Probably not the most well known brand of motor vehicles available but a unique approach none the less to what is a beautiful hand made piece of machinery.
But before we talk about the car, a little about the owner.
Brin has been a professional Aviator for most of his career. Spending 20 years in the Airforce as a test pilot doing his training with the US Navy Test Pilot School. Although Brin flew all types of military aircraft his speciality was Helicopters and Jets. With this, Brin served as a “Chopper” pilot in the Vietnam War.
Brin then went onto clock up another 20 years as an international pilot working in the private sector. Brin says he is now semi retired.
When not residing on the Gold Coast of Australia, Brin spends several months of the year residing in Hong Kong training pilots on the Airbus A320, A330 and A340.
Brin’s music taste is Irish and Australian Folk music and when he isn’t driving his Morgan or his Jag (daily drive) he plays golf out of one of the best golf carts I’ve seen – alloy wheels, double stitched leather seats along with a finished timber dash.
The Car –
Brin started out looking for something like an MG-TF and came across the small English manufacturer “Morgan”. The car was ordered through a Melbourne contact who then placed the order with Morgan in England, then finally being shipped to Australia for delivery.
Other diluted products come in varying strengths. viagra sales on line additional info People who suffer from these diseases often shy sildenafil best price away to go to doctor or to share the factors which will help you to save your relation from ED. The car is pretty much hand made with a steel chassis which then has a timber sub-frame which the hand beaten aluminium body is attached to. Brin basically had to tell them what he wanted from scratch. Otherwise you get solid disc wheels, no sound system, no carpet, minimal trim and so it went on. But that’s the thing, although it’s a Morgan it’s Brin’s Morgan and it’s unique in that it was made to Brin’s requirements. It’s a new car but it’s classic old style. If you didn’t know, you would think maybe it’s a car from the 50’s rather than 2009. And that’s another aspect to its uniqueness. It genuinely is a beautiful thing to behold.
I could go on – there’s no power steering and there are no windows to wind up. You have to physically attach the side screens that then have a slide window. To put the roof on is a manual task best requiring a skill in being able to read the weather long before rain hits. It’s seriously old school. But it’s beautiful !
The car is powered by a 1.6 litre fuel injected Ford engine developing 82 KW (110bhp) @ 6000RPM, it has 131 Newton metres of torque. The engine is coupled to a five speed Mazda manual transmission. The car weighs in at just 795Kg’s.
Braking is front discs with rear drums sitting behind the exquisite spoked wheels on 165/ 80 R 15 Continental tyres. I had the privilege of driving the car and it’s great, it performs well, it handles well, it stops well. Critics could tear it apart as a car of the 21st Century but that’s not the point. For the price, you could own many well refined marks. But it’s not what this car is about. Staring down that long ventilated bonnet, it’s hard to explain, it’s a modern car from a past era if that makes sense. It’s timeless and as if time stood still.
It’s not a Porsche, Mercedes Benz, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lambo, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Bentley or Rolls. It is however a special piece of workmanship that’s very unique and sits in a special place. As I said, it’s beautiful and it’s damn near a work of art. Understanding and knowing the owner, it now makes sense as to what attracted Brin to the car. It’s a stunning timeless design bound in such simplicity in an overly complicated motoring world. Brin admits the car is totally impractical, but he didn’t go to the trouble to be practical. I got the sense that being practical hasn’t been on Brin’s radar for quite a while. I asked Brin what is his “If I could car” would be ? – “a Bentley two door convertible” was the answer. Go figure!
Thanks Brin, this was a great privilege and experience in such a different style of motoring. – RD
