Amazingly, this record still stands forty years on. It’s not that others haven’t tried, in fact of those that did, 85% perished in their attempt.

As a boy, I remember the heroic speed record attempts by the late Sir Donald Campbell in his boat “Bluebird”. Campbell died in an attempt at his own record in 1967.

In 1976, I remember my father taking me to a local shopping mall to look at a display of a special boat . For a fourteen year old boy it was awesome. I had seen the television footage of the fateful end of Sir Donald Campbell and here I was standing alongside the next attempt – the jet engined “Spirit of Australia”. Not only that, I was intrigued by the man who had just said to me. “G’day young fella, what do you think, do you like her?” He was  painting small pictures of a homestead, I could only say “Yes, Yes I do”. The artist’s name was Ken Warby.  He painted these pictures to partially raise funds for his world record attempt. 

So what’s all this mean to me?

In the past week, along with my sister, we’ve been clearing our recently deceased parents’ home. What I was keen and hopeful to find were three small hand painted pictures of an old homestead.

I feared they may have been discarded years before, but amongst the piles, here they were, glued to an old board.

The pictures are obviously sentimental, they also represent an extraordinary accomplishment by a generally unrecognised man in Ken Warby.

In doing further research, I ironically discovered that an attempt to beat this forty year record is currently underway. The attempt is planned for early 2020, testing of the boat is well advanced.

The driver ( I think Pilot is a more accurate mantel ) is a guy by the name of Dave Warby. The son of Ken.

And the boat ? You guessed it “Spirit of Australia 2”.

Although I have no direct involvement, in a strange yet personal way, I feel I’m now intrinsically part of this next world record attempt – as small and as removed as that maybe.
