To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee

“Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit ’em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird”

“To Kill a Mockingbird” is a book I had heard of many, many times and apparently it was regarded as a classic piece of American literature. The book won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. My daughter had also said what a great read it was. It’s one of those books that I wonder why I hadn’t read years ago.

Having just finished a non-fiction book, which was totally dreary to say the least, I was looking for a “story book” – just to enjoy being taken to another place and time, if you know what I mean? I stumbled over the book in my local 2nd hand book store. It was a “gotta do it” moment, so I paid the price and was now keen to see what all the fuss was about.

If you don’t know the story,

“To Kill A Mockingbird ” was released in the 1960’s and is set in a small town in America’s southern State of Alabama in the 1930’s. Told through the eye’s of a young girl – Jean Louise Finch, affectionately known by her family as Scout. It’s the story of two young siblings living a life filled with innocence and curiosity, at times finding themselves in no end of trouble. It’s an insight into the education, the local neighbourhood and the characters both good and bad, black and white that made up the fabric of a town in the southern state of America.

Both Scout and Jem were raised by their father Atticus Finch who is the local lawyer. Atticus takes on the case of a black man who is charged with raping a local white girl. It becomes a lone struggle for justice in a town filled with prejudice and hypocrisy.

It’s not a big book. It’s a very easy and hugely enjoyable read and you really do get a great insight into a different time and place in America – surprisingly less than a century ago. Strong attitudes remained long after the the American Civil War and the ending of slavery.

There’s some great quotes from Atticus Finch that are just as relevant today.

  1. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…. until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”.
  2. “The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience”.
  3. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.”
  4. “Before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself.”

It is a great read…..
